Get To Know Our Spring 2024 Scholarship Recipient – Megan Sinclair

We’d like to formally introduce our Spring 2024 Scholarship Recipient, Megan Sinclair. The Lisa Michelle Memorial Fund was established to assist and recognize students who have lost a parent, guardian, grandparent, sibling, and/or spouse  to substance abuse. We are proud to award a $1,000 scholarship to assist Megan this year. Megan is a freshman at Oregon State University majoring in zoology.

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am Megan, an adult child of alcoholism. Growing up was challenging for me, as I had to keep everything secret. But, I have survived and am learning to thrive. I am going to college for zoology in hopes of working with animals big and small to make the world a better place.

Q: Imagine yourself 10 years from now. What goals and ambitions do you have for yourself, personally, academically, and professionally?

Well, I am on my way to achieving my zoology degree. My grades have been stellar so far and I feel right at home getting my online degree. 10 years from now, I hope to have a career in conservation, rehabilitation, or zoo keeping.

Q: Aside from a college degree, what do you hope to gain from your college experience?

I have gained the knowledge that it’s never to late to follow your dreams. I thought I was well past my prime, and that trying now was pointless. But I see now that that’s not the case.

Q: What motivates you to continue working towards accomplishing your goals?

I am motivated by wanting to care for creatures, big and small, that have been inevitably affected by humans. They deserve a second chance at life, as I have.

Q: What advice would you give to other students who have been through circumstances similar to yours?

I would say you are not alone. I grew up thinking that I was all alone in what I was experiencing. It’s ok to reach out to someone, just to talk. And don’t be afraid to try to follow your dreams.
