There is 3 months left to apply for the Fall 2024 Lisa Michelle Memorial Fund Scholarship. This year we are now offering three scholarship awards start this fall thanks to our generous donors over the years. 1st Place $1,000; 2nd Place $500; and 3rd Place $250. The deadline to submit the application and supporting materials is May 31, 2024. We look forward to receiving submissions and hearing your stories.

Get To Know Our Spring 2024 Scholarship Recipient – Megan Sinclair

We’d like to formally introduce our Spring 2024 Scholarship Recipient, Megan Sinclair. The Lisa Michelle Memorial Fund was established to assist and recognize students who have lost a parent, guardian, grandparent, sibling, and/or spouse  to substance abuse. We are proud to award a $1,000 scholarship to assist Megan this year. Megan is a freshman at Oregon State University majoring in zoology.

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am Megan, an adult child of alcoholism. Growing up was challenging for me, as I had to keep everything secret. But, I have survived and am learning to thrive. I am going to college for zoology in hopes of working with animals big and small to make the world a better place.

Q: Imagine yourself 10 years from now. What goals and ambitions do you have for yourself, personally, academically, and professionally?

Well, I am on my way to achieving my zoology degree. My grades have been stellar so far and I feel right at home getting my online degree. 10 years from now, I hope to have a career in conservation, rehabilitation, or zoo keeping.

Q: Aside from a college degree, what do you hope to gain from your college experience?

I have gained the knowledge that it’s never to late to follow your dreams. I thought I was well past my prime, and that trying now was pointless. But I see now that that’s not the case.

Q: What motivates you to continue working towards accomplishing your goals?

I am motivated by wanting to care for creatures, big and small, that have been inevitably affected by humans. They deserve a second chance at life, as I have.

Q: What advice would you give to other students who have been through circumstances similar to yours?

I would say you are not alone. I grew up thinking that I was all alone in what I was experiencing. It’s ok to reach out to someone, just to talk. And don’t be afraid to try to follow your dreams.
